Klaus Ulbrich spends a lot of time thinking about simplicity and functionality - that less is definitely more -he believes too that optimal utility can be accomplished without abandoning aesthetic sensibilities. As the founder of Temption, Klaus designs watches that won't be a passing trend but will withstand the test of time. The Temption Chronograph Classic is definitely one such watch.
Unlike so many uninspired or pedestrian chronographs that use the Valjoux 7750 movement, the Temption Chronograph Classic features design elements that clearly separate it from the pack while at the same time enhancing the experience of wearing it.
The first thing that draws my focus when I look at the Chronograph Classic is the depth and substance that the milling on the sides of the case conveys. The crown and pusher guards are similarly adorned; the combination is striking and unique. It isn't long before your eyes move to the dial and that you realize how many subtle yet important details are incorporated in the design of this watch. This is an 'instrument watch' that clearly shines in it's ability to convey all of the important details: the time, the day and date, and chronograph functions; in the most straightforward and legible way possible. To do this, everything that's superfluous has been removed from the dial. The sub-dials and day and date wheels are black to match the dial, the logo is tone on tone and discreetly presented, the hands and markers are bold and easy to recognize. Everything that's critical is easy to find and anything that's not simply isn't there. The sapphire crystal is internally coated with anti-reflective material. The tachymeter bezel is functional and easy to use.
The Chronograph Classic is 43mm in diameter and 15mm deep. It's furnished with a leather strap with a deployant clasp.
Many tool or instrument watch creators seem to revel in the inherent 'ugliness' of their watches and there's a whole subset of collectors who really gravitate towards watches that are almost offensive to the eye but flawless in their functionality. Temption seems to deliver on the concept that a great looking watch and an optimally functional instrument don't have to be mutually exclusive ideals.
At $3200 US MSRP, the Temption Chronograph Classic is a relative bargain. It's a distinctive, unique, and well-designed watch that's expertly constructed using high quality materials.
