The Ebel Classic Hexagon Regulateur is a 45mm grand slam from a watch manufacturer that's suddenly hitting it out of the park with a great deal of regularity.
Based on the Ebel Caliber 300 automatic movement, the Classic Hexagon Regulateur delivers big watch panache in a well-heeled package. Often over-sized watches don't make the casual to more formal transition all that well. While many die-hards (myself included) don't have any reservations about having the distinctive crown protecting device of a Panerai sticking out from beneath the cuffs of a formal shirt, the majority of watch aficionados change timepieces as they go from work to play; with the Classic Hexagon Regulator there's absolutely no need. The intricately detailed dial is classically arranged and exceedingly easy to read. Roman numerals on a satin track make a striking statement around the textured field in the hours subdial. There's a much more subtle seconds subdial just above the 30 minute marker (6 o'clock). The finish and fit of the case is classic Ebel with super-clean lines and an abundance of detail.
On the wrist, the big Ebel is very comfortable and easy to wear. At 11mm thick, it slips easily beneath all but the tightest of shirt cuffs. There's even a deployant buckle to make the on an off smooth and uneventful.
The retail price of the Ebel Classic Hexagon Regulateur (Ref. 1215807) is $3,850 - A great value for a watch of this caliber from an old-line Swiss manufacturer.
